Rebuilding Together Announces 2017 Neighborhoods
Rebuilding Together of St. Joseph County is excited to announce the neighborhoods selected for the 2017 Rebuilding Together home improvement program. The 2017 Rebuilding Together program will focus on South Bend’s Southside neighborhoods including the Southeast and far South Side.
Rebuilding Together is a national program dedicated to helping eligible homeowners with home repairs. Partnering locally with the City of South Bend and the St. Joseph Valley Building Trades, Rebuilding Together is able to fix homes at no cost to the homeowner. On two Saturdays in April each year, approximately 1,000 skilled and unskilled volunteers join together to make repairs to about 20 homes selected in St. Joseph County neighborhoods. All repairs are completed at no cost to the homeowner.
“Rebuilding Together is a truly transformational program. Our volunteers from both the local trades and other organizations in the community make a life changing impact for homeowners. From new roofs to handrail installations, these repairs and upgrades allow seniors and others to have a better quality of life for years to come,” stated Jim Scheetz, President of Rebuilding Together St. Joseph County.
Last April, Rebuilding Together repaired 18 homes in the Rum Village and Southeast Side neighborhoods. Priority for the home improvement program is given to the elderly, veterans and disabled homeowners that are within federal household income limits. (Eligible applicants must be income qualified.) Over the organization’s history, nearly 40,000 volunteers have donated their time and skills to rehabilitate 884 homes, with repairs valued at over $11 million.
Application packets for the 2017 program were recently sent to homeowners in the selected neighborhoods. Each packet has a letter detailing the program and an application to be completed. Applications are due October 14, 2016.
South Bend Heritage, a longstanding non-profit community development organization will help process applications and answer questions regarding the program.
